Located in the heart of Santa Cruz County (population 260,372) on California’s picturesque Central Coast, we are strategically positioned 65 miles south of San Francisco, 35 miles north of Monterey, and just 20 minutes from the bustling Silicon Valley. This prime location offers our players and families a rich cultural life and abundant recreational opportunities.

our history

1992: The Creation of Santa Cruz County Youth Premier Futbol Club

In 1992, the Santa Cruz County Youth Premier Futbol Club (SCCYPFC) was founded with the vision to consolidate elite soccer talent into a single organization dedicated to high-level competition. Recognizing that the challenges of competitive soccer differ significantly from recreational play, local youth soccer leaders saw the need for a club that could cater to players aspiring to compete at the highest levels.

At that time, Santa Cruz County was home to five youth soccer clubs: Scotts Valley/San Lorenzo Valley, Santa Cruz City, Mid County, Aptos, and Pajaro Valley, all governed by the Santa Cruz County Youth Soccer League. Each of these clubs managed Class 1, Class 3, and Recreational programs.

However, it quickly became apparent that the county lacked the player pool to sustain this structure while remaining competitive with teams from outside the area. The solution was clear: establish a club focused exclusively on competitive soccer. Thus, SCCYPFC was formed under the leadership of dedicated individuals including Gary Masamori, Roland Hedgpeth, David Wright, Bill Davila, Richard Munoz, Sergio Sierra, Tom Vignola, Rich Sanders, and others. This new club became the premier Class 1 Elite soccer club in Santa Cruz County, paving the way for local talent to thrive in a more focused and competitive environment.

Unifying Santa Cruz County's Class 1 Soccer: The SCC Breakers' Journey

Creating a true Class 1 club in Santa Cruz County was a significant step forward, but it came with numerous challenges. Unity was initially lacking, as each team operated independently with its own name, uniforms, and colors. Tryouts were organized separately, and teams often retained the same coaches and managers for many years, sometimes until the teams graduated from the program.

A pivotal moment came in 2001 when the U19 team, coached by Sergio Sierra and managed by Larry Biggam, won the State Cup Championship. This team, known as the SCC Breakers, was a unique blend of talent from all corners of Santa Cruz County. Little did anyone know that the SCC Breakers name would eventually represent all Class 1 teams in the county.

Following their State Cup victory, the SCC Breakers competed in a prestigious international tournament in Italy. There, they faced top European clubs, including AS Roma, whose U19 team was captained by future 2006 World Cup Champion Daniele De Rossi. This tournament was a defining experience for the Breakers players, including Lupe Martinez, Patrick Scheufler, Matt Biggam, Kurt Munoz, Matt McClosky, and others.

This era marked a turning point for Santa Cruz County soccer, demonstrating the potential and success that could be achieved through unity and collaboration across the county's diverse soccer communities.

A New Era for Santa Cruz County Breakers

In early 2004, two pivotal events unified the club and established the brand recognition we enjoy today.

After extensive deliberation, it was decided to rename the club to Santa Cruz County Breakers, accompanied by a new logo reflecting this change. The club adopted Navy Blue and White as its official colors, and from that point onward, all teams operated under the same name, wore the same uniform, and embraced the same team colors. This rebranding fostered a strong sense of unity and identity within the club.

The efforts of Bob Poser, Matt McDowell, and Tom Nieto were instrumental in this transformation. They diligently researched uniform options and secured a partnership with Adidas America, resulting in significant donations that helped outfit all Breakers teams in the new club uniforms.

Additionally, the club launched its first Breakers Soccer Camps, benefiting all teams within the club. That year, the U18 girls' team, coached by Ashley Edgar and assisted by Art Romswinckel, achieved remarkable success by winning the prestigious San Diego Surf Cup. Ashley’s team also reached the CYSA State Cup semifinals three times, each time narrowly losing to the eventual champions.

These developments in 2004 marked the beginning of a new era for the Santa Cruz County Breakers, establishing a unified identity and setting the stage for continued success and growth.

2005: A Year of National Recognition and Achievements

In 2005, the Santa Cruz County Breakers achieved national acclaim, earning the title of the #2 Elite soccer club for boys and girls in the nation from the Super Y-League, trailing only behind the Chicago Magic and New York Red Bulls. This prestigious recognition highlighted the club's dedication to excellence and competitive success.

That year, three boys' teams and one girls' team from the Breakers qualified for the Super Y-League Nationals in Florida, showcasing their skills on a national stage. Additionally, many players were selected to participate in the Olympic Development Program (ODP), a vital identification process for the US National Team. Notably, Jose Gonzales received his first invitation to a US National training camp, while Francisco Gomez and Miguel Silva also represented the county in the US National Team program. On the girls' side, Brie Wiles stood out as the only player invited to a National training camp.

2005 also saw significant changes in the club's leadership. Paul Holocher was appointed head men's soccer coach at Cal Poly, taking on the challenge of revamping their program. Consequently, Paolo Carbone stepped into the role of Breakers Boys and Girls Coaching Director, ensuring the continued development and success of the club's players.

This remarkable year solidified the Santa Cruz County Breakers' reputation as a top-tier soccer club, dedicated to fostering talent and achieving excellence at both national and international levels.

2010: A New Era in Youth Soccer

The strength of a soccer club lies not only in its players but also in its ability to unite a community of supporters who fundraise and seek sponsorships to provide scholarships and continuously enhance the quality of its programs. Over the years, many dedicated individuals have generously contributed their time, money, and resources, enabling the club to develop top-quality players and compete at the highest levels.

A cornerstone of this success is the excellence of our professional coaching staff. Many of our head coaches hold USSF National Coaching Licenses or NSCAA National Coaching Licenses, reflecting their high level of expertise and commitment to the sport. The club has consistently prioritized qualified, licensed coaches to lead our teams, ensuring the optimal development of our players.

In 2010, these efforts culminated in a new era for youth soccer within our club. The combination of strong community support and exceptional coaching has laid a solid foundation for continued growth and success, fostering a nurturing environment where young athletes can thrive and achieve their full potential.

Evolution and Excellence: Santa Cruz County Breakers

The club's brand and look have evolved significantly, thanks in part to its status as a Nike Premier Club. This partnership has enhanced the club's visibility and appeal, further solidifying its reputation for excellence.

The Breakers excel in promoting their most talented and motivated players to universities and USSF soccer coaches at both the state and national levels. Participation in various showcase tournaments, club college nights, and other events provides players with invaluable exposure to top university coaches nationwide. Since the establishment of the Breakers Academy, scouts now regularly visit Santa Cruz County to evaluate local talent.

The Breakers Cup has become a beloved tradition for teams and clubs throughout Northern California, attracting over 200 teams each year. This event not only showcases the skills of our players but also reinforces the club’s status as a premier destination for developing exceptional soccer talent.

2022: Strategic Alliance with Aptos Soccer Club

Aptos Soccer Club and Santa Cruz County Breakers enter into a strategic alliance to combine their competitive soccer programs, creating a larger, more robust program to better serve players in Santa Cruz County. This partnership aims to enhance player development, provide better coaching resources, and offer more competitive opportunities.

2024: Formation of Santa Cruz United F.C.

Following a successful two-year strategic alliance, the Santa Cruz County Breakers and Aptos Soccer Club have announced the permanent merger of their competitive soccer programs, effective July 1, 2024. The new entity, Santa Cruz United F.C., will become the largest competitive soccer program in Santa Cruz County, boasting over 600 players and 38 teams.

The decision to merge follows two years of collaborative efforts under a strategic alliance agreement signed in 2022. This partnership allowed the clubs’ boards and technical staff to work together on a temporary basis, resulting in numerous successes that highlighted the benefits of a combined program. The merger aims to provide players with a more comprehensive pathway at the competitive level by creating larger player pools in each age group, enabling better alignment with coaches and teammates of similar abilities and commitment levels.

Despite this merger, Aptos Soccer Club and Santa Cruz County Breakers will continue to operate their community recreational soccer programs independently from the combined competitive club.
